Overview

WANECAM3 (West African Network for Clinical Trials of Antimalarial Drugs) 3rd version

is an Africa – Europe research consortium dedicated to accelerating the development of next generation malaria treatments in response to the growing threat of antimalarial drug resistance.
Building on the experience and achievements of WANECAM1 and WANECAM2, WANECAM3 brings together African and European countries through research institutions, clinical trial sites, academic partners and product development partners.
The consortium will evaluate novel non-artemisinin antimalarial compounds and combinations through Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials in adults and children in malaria endemic regions of sub-Saharan Africa. The project aims to generate evidence on the safety, efficacy and transmission-blocking activity of these new treatments.
A key ambition of WANECAM3 is to advance the development of a potential single dose cure for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria, while addressing emerging antimalarial drug resistance and strengthening sustainable clinical research capacity across Africa.

11

Partner Institutions

Leading academic, clinical, and industrial leaders across Africa and Europe.

6

Participating Nations

Mali, Gabon, Burkina Faso, Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom.

3rd

Consortium Phase

Over a decade of continuous collaborative clinical research excellence.

The challenge

Malaria continues to place a major burden on sub Saharan Africa. In 2023, approximately 263 million malaria cases and almost 600,000 deaths were reported. Current malaria control faces two major challenges: the emergence and spread of partial artemisinin resistance and poor adherence to existing multi day treatment regimens. These challenges create an urgent need for new antimalarial combinations with novel modes of action and simpler treatment regimens.

Our ambition

To achieve a single dose cure for uncomplicated falciparum malaria.
WANECAM3 aims to combine novel, potent, non-artemisinin antimalarial drugs to develop a single dose cure for uncomplicated falciparum malaria. The new treatment should be safe, achieve rapid and complete parasite clearance, provide sustained protection against reinfection, have a high barrier to the development of drug resistance, block onward transmission and be well tolerated by patients.

Strategic Goals

Objectives

01

Phase 2 & 3 Trial Data

Generate Phase 2 and 3 clinical trial data on novel non-artemisinin combinations.

02

Single-Dose Approval

Advance a promising single-dose combination through Phase 3 towards regulatory approval.

03

Resistance & Transmission

Assess transmission blocking activity and monitor antimalarial drug resistance.

Consortium Structure

Governance

WANECAM3 brings together 11 partner institutions from Africa and Europe under a coordinated governance structure designed to ensure effective project management, strong scientific leadership and high-quality implementation of the project’s clinical and research activities.
