The Heidelberg University Hospital with the Faculty of Medicine are internationally recognized centers for patient care, research and training.
Heidelberg University Hospital is one of the largest and most prestigious medical centers in Germany. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Heidelberg ranks among the internationally renowned institutes for biomedical research in Europe. The two institutions have a common goal which is to develop new therapies and quickly put them into practice for patients. With around 7,600 employees, training and qualification becomes an important issue. Each year, approximately 550,000 patients are treated on an inpatient or outpatient basis in more than 40 clinics and departments with 2,000 beds. Currently, around 3,400 future doctors study in Heidelberg, the Heidelberg Medical Curriculum Reform (HeiCuMed) is one of the best medical training programs in Germany.
Main objective of the clinical parasitology group, department of infectious diseases
Our group aims to improve the impact of pharmacological interventions for the control and eventually elimination of malaria. This involves improving our understanding of host-parasite and drug-parasite interactions, which promote the evolution of chemoresistance against malaria parasites.
