Operational Structure
Work Packages

Work Packages 1
Project Coordination & Administration
WP1 provides the overall coordination and management of WANECAM3. It ensures that the consortium works effectively towards its objectives and that project activities, milestones and deliverables are implemented according to plan.
Working closely with the scientific leadership, WP1 supports the administrative, financial and operational coordination of the consortium and facilitates collaboration across the different Work Packages and partner institutions.
Work Packages 2
Scientific Leadership
WP2 provides the scientific leadership of WANECAM3 and guides the overall scientific implementation of the project.
Led by USTTB in Mali, WP2 works closely with project coordination and the other Work Packages to ensure scientific coherence, methodological quality and alignment of the consortium’s research activities with the overall objectives of WANECAM3.

Work Packages 3
Clinical Trials
WP3 is at the core of WANECAM3’s clinical research programme. It is responsible for the conduct and management of multicentre Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials evaluating novel non-artemisinin antimalarial treatments.
The trials will generate critical evidence on the safety and efficacy of new treatment combinations in adults and children with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria and contribute to the development of a potential single-dose cure.
Work Packages 4
Capacity Strengthening & Transmission
WP4 strengthens sustainable clinical and scientific research capacity across the WANECAM3 network while supporting studies on malaria transmission.
The Work Package will strengthen existing clinical trial sites, support the development of new research capacity in Africa and provide training and mentorship opportunities for early-career researchers. It will also build expertise and capacity to assess the transmission-blocking potential of new antimalarial treatments.
Building sustainable African research capacity
WP4 will support the development of a fully functional clinical trial site in Ethiopia and strengthen research capacity across participating African institutions.

Work Packages 5
Molecular Surveillance & Drug Resistance
WP5 investigates the emergence and evolution of antimalarial drug resistance across WANECAM3 clinical trial sites.
Through molecular surveillance, parasite susceptibility studies and genomic approaches, WP5 will monitor markers associated with resistance and help generate evidence on how Plasmodium falciparum responds to antimalarial treatments during the project.
Work Packages 6
Project Coordination & Administration
WP6 ensures that WANECAM3 activities, progress and research findings are effectively communicated and disseminated to relevant audiences and stakeholders.
The Work Package supports external communication, scientific dissemination, community and stakeholder engagement, and the exploitation of project results. It will also contribute to preparing the pathway towards product registration, policy engagement and future access to successful treatments.
