Overview of the Project
Work package 1 (WP1) provides the overall framework under which the project’s vision, values and strategic plan will be developed, regularly updated, implemented and evaluated throughout the life of the project.
In work package 2 (WP2) we will perform state of the art phase IIIb study aimed at the licensure of two new Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs). All expertise available in the network of European and African collaborators in this proposal will be brought to the table so that the above mentioned clinical trials will meet all international standards of the highest quality of trials.

In work package 3 (WP3), joint trainings of scientists through group training, on-site training and permanent online contacts, degree training, mentorship will further fill existing needs of development. In addition, a thorough epidemiological study conducted in the least developed member of the consortium (Guinea) will initially help in bringing that group up to speed through intense training, capacity development and mentoring. By the end of this project, we expect to be able to run state of the art drug clinical trials in Mali and Burkina Faso and substancially improve clinical trial capacity in Guinea. Work package 4 (WP4) will have a series of activities that will promote communication, exchange of ideas and personnel, flow of information across the three countries and effective networking. These four work packages will effectively foster the development of a trans-national mega-research team, necessary for large
clinical trials and studies in the region. The primary decision making body will be termed “Project Board” (PB).

At the institution level, the local project investigator (PI) will be responsible for monitoring progress towards the respective milestones and deliverables applicable to his Institution. An internal progress report is scheduled every 6 months and will be an additional mechanism of monitoring progress.
At the work package level, each work-package leader will be responsible for monitoring and evaluation of activities and milestones applicable to his work-package across the three countries. An internal progress report is scheduled every 6 months and will be an additional mechanism of monitoring progress. The project coordinator will oversee overall progress across the Network and report to the Project Board during either teleconference or face-to-face meetings. Should there be the need to take immediate action on a specific issue, a special Project Board meeting can be convened (preferably by telephone) to discuss the issue.
